Handy Editorials: Freelance Proofreading and Editing services

It's the little details that are vital. Little things make BIG things happen. - John Wooden
Why do you need an editor or a proofreader? After the months or years you have spent carefully crafting your book, you owe it to yourself to take the time to make sure that it is the best it can possibly be. Simple spelling mistakes, grammatical errors or plot inconsistencies can lose you readers and undermine your reputation as a good, professional author.

Why Do I Need An Editor?

Why you need a proofreader ALL manuscripts need editing. You have probably read and re-read your work dozens of times; however, the closeness and familiarity you have with what you have written guarantees that you will have missed something. Your brain will read what you think should be there, not what actually is there. The fresh eye that I bring can highlight any errors to provide an accurate, professional document.

Another reason to work with an editor is that you may not realise that what you have written is erroneous. Editors and proofreaders are trained to know the subtleties and exceptions that litter the English language and will ensure your text is of an exceptional standard.

Being sufficiently distanced from your work, and having the training needed from professional bodies such as the Publishing Training Company and the Society for Editors and Proofreaders, I can iron out any distracting problems or inconsistencies, returning to you a high-quality manuscript that will stand out from the rest.

I have worked with
  • a variety of publishers, both as a copy-editor and a proofreader
  • authors who want to submit their manuscript for publication, but need a final "polish" to give it that edge
  • authors who are looking to self-publish
  • authors who have a story to tell but don't know where to start
How close your manuscript is to publication will depend on what level of input you will need. I offer proofreading and proof-editing for manuscripts ready to publish; copy-editing for those who have finally finished writing and need a professional to look at their work; a more in-depth developmental edit for the writer who needs to turn a document into a saleable product; and on-going editing and support for those traversing the seas of self-publishing.

Testimonials

Neala Okuromade: What's Your Financial Gameplan?
Writing and self publishing my first book seemed daunting, even unreachable. I was extremely fortunate when I was introduced to Handy Editorials, who came highly recommended by a colleague. Claire not only lived up to her reputation by editing my book to an extremely high standard, not an easy feat when dealing with figures and spreadsheets, I was also impressed by the much needed advice given to me on the correct steps I needed to take in order to get my book self published. When I saw my completed book for the first time and looked at the pages I thought no one would have ever known I self published my book, it was done to the Publishing Industry's high standards, thanks to Claire.
Would I recommend this company? YES without even hesitating. You know that when dealing with this company you are in experienced, trustworthy and safe hands. Her work ethos is like none I've ever encountered. She works to exceptionally high standards.

Belinda Nnoka: Don't let Bullies Ruin Your Life
I met Claire...just when I was in the process of getting my first ever book published. I had just recalled my script from my publisher as he had produced 10 complimentary copies of my book which had been strewn with errors.
I took Claire up on her offer of proofreading and boy, was I glad I did! I had only asked Claire to check for spelling and grammatical errors but she went over and above this. Claire raised a whole slew of questions and issues that neither my previous editor nor my publisher had picked up. One overlooked issue in particular was so serious that I had to terminate my contract with that publisher as they clearly were not paying proper attention to my script. Claire's professionalism and commitment to my project saved me from getting into a lot of trouble.
I cannot recommend Claire highly enough. She is by far the most tenacious, dedicated and thorough individual who has had dealings with my project. Whether you are a first time author or an old hand when it comes to writing, I would suggest you make use of Claire's services; her input can only significantly improve your project.

What Service Do I Need?

Proofreading

Proofreading polishes your text
A proofreader corrects spelling, punctuation and grammar errors, and ensures consistency throughout your document. They do not edit your work.

Proof-Editing

Some clients need more than a basic proofread, but don't require (or don't know that they require) the full edit a copy-editor will provide. This extra "polish" is done during a proofread, where a small amount of grammatical editing is also included.

Copy-Editing

Copy-editing styles your text
Copy-editing is a more in-depth process, which looks at maintaining your style and structure, and ensures the correctness of the document and checks that it is easy to read.
A copy-editor may need to rewrite part of your work with your co-operation.

Project Managing

Ghostwriting, Document management, Publishing assistance, etc.
There are many other factors involved in presenting your document, ranging from page layout and formatting, to time management and more. Whether you are self-publishing for the first time, co-ordinating a multi-person report or are a publisher with a new project, contact me to see how I can help further.
